NEW YORK, Feb. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A new Risperdal lawsuit (http://www.risperdallawsuit2014.com/) website has been launched by the attorneys at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, who are actively filing cases on behalf of men and young boys who allegedly developed male breasts caused by the antipsychotic drug, the Firm reports.
Among other things, the Firm's new site will inform individuals who may have experienced this complication, which refers to the condition, gynecomastia, about their legal options in filing a claim against Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Readers can also find information related to symptoms associated with this alleged Risperdal side effect, which may include pain, tenderness, swelling, and/or nipple discharge in one or both breasts. According to court documents, gynecomastia complications have been alleged in several of the Risperdal lawsuits now pending in a consolidated litigation underway in Pennsylvania's Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. As of January 2014, more than 200 claims had been filed in this proceeding. (U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, 04-cv-1529)
"With our new Risperdal lawsuit website, our Firm's goal is to provide vital information to anyone who may have been injured by this anti-psychotic medication and may be eligible to file a claim," says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free and confidential case reviews to individuals who may have experienced Risperdal gynecomastia complications after taking the drug.
Risperdal Gynecomastia Lawsuits
According to hundreds of Risperdal lawsuit filings now pending in Pennsylvania state court, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the drug's possible association with gynecomastia and other side effects. They further allege that Risperdal, an antipsychotic medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and adolescents, has been promoted off-label for the past several years. This includes the use of Risperdal in children, which was not cleared by the FDA until 2006. (Risperdal Litigation, case number 100300296)
Risperdal also made news in regards to Johnson & Johnson's recent settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice, which resulted in the company's payment of $2.2 million in civil and criminal charges involving Risperdal and certain other medications. After a decade-long investigation into Johnson & Johnson's practices, the federal government accused the pharmaceutical giant of marketing Risperdal to elderly patients with dementia and children. The agreement was reached in November 2013.
Coinciding with this Risperdal settlement, Consumer Reports published the findings of research the following month that showed a three-fold increase in the number of children treated with anti-psychotic medications over the past 15 years An investigation led by the consumer watchdog group also found that many of the scripts written for Risperdal and other drugs are not for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, but in the treatment of behavioral problems in children, a use not approved by the FDA.
If you or a loved one took Risperdal and developed gynecomastia, a condition referring to male breast development, you may be eligible to file a claim over the anti-psychotic drug.
