Meet Ingrid, Lovebug, and Snickers
One look at the bright, smiling face in this photo and it is hard to imagine that this same woman was in an accident that nearly took her life.
About 14 years ago, Ingrid was involved in a dirt bike accident that left her with several fractured vertebrae. Restricted to a hospital bed for nine, grueling months, Ingrid found herself relying on her two cats for emotional support. They lay by her side every day for those nine months, providing her the comfort and strength she needed to heal.
Fast forward 14 years and Ingrid is still the energetic and spirited woman she has always been. To her, the "disabled" label she has been given is just that: a label that doesn't hold her back from living her life. She still enjoys hobbies like gardening and walks on the beach with friends. And on the days that she doesn't feel up to going out, she spends time with her cats, Lovebug (pictured above) and Snickers.

Fuserna Foundation Awards $20,000 Grant to PAWS San Diego!
They say good things come in threes, but for PAWS, apparently good things come in 20s!
We have been celebrating PAWS San Diego's 20th anniversary of serving low-income people and their pets all year long. Earlier this year, we officially launched the PAWS Pantry Program, through which we have already assisted over a thousand pet families with emergency supplies of food. Over the summer we hosted a roaring 20s event complete with flapper dancers, classic cars, and a live jazz band. Now, we have more cause to celebrate with a $20,000 grant from the Fuserna Foundation!
The Fuserna Foundation, based in Beverly Hills, reached out to PAWS San Diego back in August about applying for a grant. Impressed at the vast impact that PAWS is able to make on a relatively low budget, Fuserna knew their funds were needed and would go directly back into the community. One whirlwind application and approval process later, PAWS was notified that our application had been approved! The Fuserna Foundation also presented PAWS San Diego with a challenge: to match their grant. Will you help us meet that goal?
PAWS San Diego will use some of these funds to add new clients to our Pet Care and Vet Care Program, some of whom have been calling for help for months. Once all program requirements have been met, they will be eligible to receive in-home delivery of pet food and supplies, dog walking services, transportation to veterinary appointments, and funds for veterinary care as they are available.
We couldn't be more appreciative of the opportunity the Fuserna Foundation has granted PAWS San Diego, however there are still so many more people and pets who need our help. If you would like to help us match their grant, please click here. Your support to PAWS keeps people and pets together during a time when we should all be with those we love. Donations are tax deductible and will be acknowledged with a letter receipt.
Winter Pet Safety Tips
Though San Diego maintains a moderate climate year round, the changes in temperature can be taxing on a pet's health. Extra precautions during winter months will make sure your four-footed family members stay safe and warm.
Help your pets remain happy and healthy during the colder months by following these simple guidelines:
Indoors and warm: Don't leave dogs or cats outdoors when the temperature drops. Most dogs, and all cats, are safer indoors, except when taken out for exercise. Short-coated dogs may feel more comfortable wearing a sweater during walks. If for some reason your dog is outdoors much of the day, he or she must be protected by a dry, draft-free shelter that is large enough to allow the dog to sit and lie down comfortably, but small enough to hold in his/her body heat.
Keep feral and stray cats warm: If there are ferals or strays in your neighborhood, remember that they need protection from the elements. It's easy to give them shelter.
Keep the water flowing: Pets who spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes energy. Routinely check your pet's water dish to make certain the water is fresh and unfrozen. Use plastic bowls for food and water rather than metal; when the temperature is low, your pet's tongue can stick and freeze to metal.
Be careful with cars: Warm engines in parked cars attract cats and small wildlife, who may crawl up under the hood. To avoid injuring any hidden animals, bang on your car's hood to scare them away before starting your engine.
The best tip of all: keep your pets with you. Probably the best prescription for winter's woes is to keep your dog or cat inside with you and your family. Dogs and cats are social animals who crave human companionship.
