Mayoral candidates participate in live debate on AM 760 KFMB

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Three of the four leading candidates in San Diego's race for mayor faced tough questions Thursday about issues affecting San Diegans.

David Alvarez, Mike Aguirre and Kevin Faulconer joined CBS News 8's sister station AM 760 KFMB's Mike Slater Thursday morning for a debate.

They discussed the city's pension and Aguirre's plan to create savings by submitting less than the required 100 percent payment to the pension program. Aguirre says that city employees need to acknowledge the city's financial situation.

"If you do not respect actuarial science you will not be receiving your pensions," Aguirre said.

"We've got obligations. We have been making these payments because it's the right thing to do. We don't want to get into trouble again with the city," Alvarez said.

"I'm not interested in five to ten years of lawsuits. I'm interested in moving this city forward right now," Faulconer said.

Nathan Fletcher did not attend Thursday's debate.
