Homemade dog food by Shelly

BY SHELLY DUNN

I HAVE TALKED ABOUT MAKING MY OWN DOG FOOD ON THE AIR FOR YEARS.  PEOPLE OFTEN ASK ME HOW I MAKE IT AND WHAT I USE.

I AM HAPPY TO SHARE WITH YOU WHAT I HAVE FED THE PAST 4 DOGS IN MY WORLD FOR YEARS NOW.  PLEASE NOTE, THIS IS NOT

A RECIPE I HAVE FROM A VET, IT IS SIMPLY WHAT I HAVE FED LUCY AND SPIKE SINCE THEY HAVE COME TO LIVE WITH ME.  I USE THIS

'GOO' TO COAT THEIR KIBBLE (HUNDENFLOCKEN) TO ASSURE THAT THEY EAT IT ALL AT ONCE AND DO NOT ALLOW FLIES TO COME LAY

EGGS ON LEFT OVER NUGGETS.

TO START, I USE ALL ORGANIC INGREDIENTS.  THE RICE IS FROM COSTCO AS IS THE CHICKEN (I USE THIGHS BUT THEY ALSO HAVE BREAST

MEAT AVAILABLE)  AND THE PUMPKIN IS FROM WHOLE FOODS, ALTHOUGH MY LOCAL KEIL'S GROCERY SELLS ORGANIC YAMS, WHICH ALSO WORK.

THE FIRST STEP IS GET THE CROCKPOT READY.

NEXT, YOU CUT THE CHICKEN INTO BITE SIZED PIECES

THEN TAKE THE CAN OF PUMPKIN AND OPEN IT.  PLACE CONTENTS INTO CROCKPOT AND SMASH UP A BIT.

TO THE PUMPKIN, ADD THE CUT UP CHICKEN

ADD THE RICE NEXT.  I USE 2 CANS FULL OF THE RICE PER BATCH

THIS TIME OF YEAR, IF FLEAS ARE AN ISSUE WITH YOUR DOG, ADD SOME CLOVES OF GARLIC, CUT UP, OF COURSE

THEN YOU ADD WATER TO FILL THE CROCKPOT TO THE TOP (DO NOT ADD TOO MUCH AS YOU DO NOT WANT IT TO SPILL OVER AS IT

COOKS.

YOU THEN SET THE CROCKPOT TO THE AMOUNT OF TIME YOU HAVE.  THIS IS A RUSH JOB, SO I SET IT ON 6 HOURS.  IT WORKS JUST

AS WELL TO GO THE FULL 10 HOURS OVERNIGHT.

THE REST IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME.  WHEN I GO DOWNSTAIRS IN THE MORNINGS ON MY WAY TO WORK, EACH DOG GETS ABOUT A CUP OF KIBBLE WITH 2 OR 3 SPOONFULS OF THE 'GOO' MIXED IN VERY WELL.  I ALSO SUPPLEMENT WITH A SARDINE OIL FROM THE PET STORE.  IT IS ODORLESS BUT HELPS THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEM AND KEEPS THEIR COATS SHINY!

I HOPE YOU TRY THIS FOR YOUR DOG.  IT IS A SURE FIRE WAY TO KEEP THEM HAPPY AND HEALTHY.
