Our furry pals need good, clean food

By Shelly Dunn
Dogs have always been a part of my life.  Dad brought our first one home when I was just a baby.  His name was Trouble, because the first thing my mom said was, "that dog is going to be nothing but Trouble."  I only remember from pictures and family stories.

Thankfully, we always had a dog in the Dunn family.  Mom would always act as if she did not like them, but she was the most defensive and protective of each of them.

Rocky, a mix between a poodle and dachshund--long body, poodle hair, was taken on every family vacation.  That dog saw California (we drove from Oklahoma City) in 1969 and Florida in 1972 and all lake trips in the summer.

So, the tradition and feelings about dogs was firmly planted in me.

When I got to San Diego, it was only a few short years before I adopted Suzie and Chloe.  They were black, furry Chow-Chow/Rottie littermates and each lived to be 17 years old.  They were my constant companions.  I know from travels with them, every dog friendly motel/hotel up and down the coast of this beautiful state.

Today, my world of dogs centers around Lucy and Spike.  Lucy was rescued out of Mexico and I found her at an adoption event in El Cajon in 2005.  She was 6 months old and brought some youth back to Suzie.  When Chloe left this world, Spike was waiting to fill the void.  He was already an adult dog.  The vet said about 2 or 3.  He was unaltered and had his dew claws removed, as if someone was breeding him or showing him.  He is handsome!  He had been found exhausted and with over 250 cactus 'spikes' in his coat.  They were all removed, of course, but he was still nervous and hated loud noises.  I always wondered if he was in a car wreck or was led to harms way by horrible people.  Eventually, he came to my house, grew confident and bonded with me and Lucy and now Dean (The Commander) and Katrina (his daughter who volunteers at The Barking Lot)

Lucy and Spike's happiness brings joy to my heart.  The clown like boxer behavior makes my whole world smile...every day.

It is my hope that sharing these stories and information makes you love the experience of having dogs in your life as well.  It is my goal to share fun, useful information about our furry family members and events that help us help them.

One of the greatest facilities to walk your dog off leash is Fiesta Island.  FIDO is the Fiesta Island Dog Owners club.  They have all sorts of projects to keep the island open for us, including staying on top of developments City Hall has in mind for the area.  Please help them if you can.  This is a very good organization!

Please check this site weekly to find more information pertaining to your 4 legged friends.

Now, 'who wants to go for a walk?'
