San Diego to commemorate 10th anniversary of 9/11 this week

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diegans this week will observe the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with everything from radio promotions to panel discussions and interfaith prayer services, culminating Sunday with a blood drive in Balboa Park and a half-time ceremony at the Chargers opening game.

On Thursday, radio stations KyXy 96.5 and Sophie 103.7 will team up with the World Trade Center San Diego to host "Peace, Prosperity & Diversity Through Trade: A 9/11 Commemoration" at the Port Pavilion at the Broadway Pier, highlighted by a performance by the rock band Jefferson Starship.

The event opens to the public at 2 p.m., with a walk from the County Administration Center to the Port Pavilion set for 4 p.m. The ceremony will include a moment of silence, singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and a military flyover.

Also on Thursday:

-- Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox and police Chief David Bejarano will speak at at an 8:30 a.m. event about public safety in a post-9/11 world at the Elks Lodge, 901 Elks Lane;

-- the Society of Professional Journalists will host a forum entitled, "9/11 Remembered: How the Media and Law Enforcement Responded." The program, beginning at 7 p.m. at the 10News studios at 4600 Air Way, will feature journalists who covered the attacks and their aftermath, and Sheriff Bill Gore, who was the head of the San Diego FBI office at the time; and

-- San Diego State University's Center for Islamic and Arabic Studies will host a panel discussion about the attacks at 7 p.m. at West Commons, Room 220.

On Friday, San Diego firefighter Tim Swanson will unveil a 9/11 memorial he created, which includes a piece of steel from the twin towers. Speakers at the 10:30 a.m. event at Fire Station 21 at 750 Grand Ave. include retired New York City fire Lt. Joe Torrillo, who survived being buried in the rubble of the collapsed buildings.

Also on Friday, a wreath will be placed beneath the 9/11 memorial tree along Warren Mall at UC San Diego at 7:30 a.m., and it will remain there all day. A moment of silence is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.

At the University of San Diego on Friday, an interfaith prayer service is set for noon, followed by a panel discussion featuring Supervisor Ron Roberts, a former Navy SEAL enrolled at the university and a political science professor who specializes in the Middle East.

On Sunday -- the actual anniversary of the attacks -- scheduled events include:

-- "A Decade of Remembrance" at 8 a.m. at Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista, including a run/walk, a moment of silence, a free pancake breakfast and demonstrations by military and police;

-- the 9/11 Heroes Run will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of state Route 52 and Mast Boulevard at Mission Trails Regional Park;

-- The 10th annual Patriots Day Blood Drive will be hosted by radio stations 105.7 The Walrus and XX 1090, along with the San Diego Blood Bank, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park;

-- 760 KFMB-AM's Mike Slater will broadcast a live show, the "Tenth Annual Memorial Service" from the USS Midway, starting at 2:30 p.m. (boarding begins at 1:30 p.m.), including a wreath-laying ceremony, a US Navy flyover, fire department flyover, members of FDNY, honor guards, Navy Band and reading of names.

-- A tribute to fallen firefighters and law enforcement officers will be held by the Carlsbad Firefighters Association, at 10 a.m. at the South Cardiff State Beach parking lot off Highway 101.

-- The city of Escondido and California Center for the Arts will co-host a ceremony at 1 p.m. at Grape Day Park that will include a reading of victims' names;

-- In Oceanside, a free event will be held at 2 p.m. at the Pier Amphitheatre at 200 S. The Strand, with concerts and tribute speakers.

-- The Chargers will honor emergency first-responders at halftime of their season opener against the Vikings; and

-- Interfaith religious leaders will hold services to commemorate the anniversary at 4:30 p.m. at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park.
