JACK is presenting The Romantics at Pala Casino on Valentine's Day! Their 1979 song, "What I Like About You," was catchy and kind of Beatles-esque but very few radio stations thought it would be a hit, so it didn't get played a lot back then.
The band came to San Diego for a concert shortly after their album was released. KGB plugged the hell out of the show, which was held at the old Roxy Theatre in Pacific Beach. The Roxy's capacity was 400 people. 75 tickets were sold. The Romantics were great, with catchy songs, most of which resembled "What I Like About You," and the band looked snazzy in their matching red leather outfits. But it was like a rehearsal more than a show. Like jamming for your friends.
I had a few drinks with the band after the show. Very down-to-earth Midwest boys. I liked them quite a bit. When I drove home, I thought, "Jeez, it's too bad these guys will never go anywhere."
30 years later, after hearing "What I Like About You" on seemingly dozens of TV commercials, in movies and on the radio (finally,) the Romantics HAVE gone somewhere!
It could not have happened to a nicer bunch of guys. Go see them!
